

“We’ve held nine events on five islands since the pandemic began and we’re honored to partner with the GCA to put on this multi-location extravaganza and greatly expand our impact. Lokahi Kits also include educational materials and a pack of Hoo Wala Au – Talk Story Cards, which include a range of questions for parents and children alike with the goal of sparking conversation and bringing families closer together. Attendees also received a CFS Family Lokahi Kit, which includes items purchased and donated by local organizations and businesses, like children’s books by local authors, card games, activity books, parenting and family resources, stress relief ideas, and hotline information. The Festival of Hope, held in Hilo at the Nani Mau Restaurant &Garden, featured drive-through booths where groceries, chef-prepared meal kits, Community Resource Kits, PPE items and advice, and educational resources were distributed. Hundreds of families across Oahu, Maui, Kauai and Hawaii Island took part in Saturday’s event.

“This is a simple idea meant to bless people right now.Part of a series of events, the Festival of Hope for Families events help provide needed supplies, resources, screenings, and family friendly activities to those in need during the COVID-19 pandemic. “We want to make an impact and do our part to help the community,” Mattos said. “I want to see what the needs are in the community and go from there.”Īfter a long month away from his restaurants, Mattos is ready to give something back to anyone who might be struggling during this time.

Mattos has thought about continuing to offer free meals on the weekends, but is waiting to see what the response will be. “We wanted to give people something really nice to eat, since they will be taking the time to drive out to us,” Mattos said. Staff from both businesses will serve people a good, healthy portion of shoyu chicken, pork with gravy, vegetables and rice. Mattos collaborated with a team to put together a well-rounded meal that has elements from Coconut Grill and Nani Mau Gardens.

Everyone must be present to receive a meal, since there is a limited amount. The line will start in the parking lot of Nani Mau Gardens and will be a drive-through to help keep people safe and socially distanced in their cars. “We want to give people something great to take home to eat together.” “The hope is to have people who really need this in line for food,” Mattos said. Mattos said he has heard story after story about people not receiving unemployment benefits and finding it difficult to buy food. Since then, Mattos has worked to renovate the restaurants and implement new ideas to begin offering takeout options.īecause of the closures, many of his employees were furloughed.
